The Power of Questions & Listening – From June 21st 2021

Happy Monday!

Thank you for the amount of positive feedback I received after sending out this email. I will continue to do so with the objective to highlight what I have been up to, and what’s inspired me personally so that it can help serve your own personal growth & development.

What I LEARNED

Last week I signed up and attended one of the People Team’s organized ‘Motivational Moments’ seminar’s. This particular seminar was of interest, as it was with Richard Mullender, Chief Hostage Negotiator for the Met Police and British Army. It was a fascinating seminar on the power of communication to get results. If you would like to see Richard’s session in your own time, then you can watch it here

Here are the main points I took away:

The power of listening – the person you are talking too with give away more then you realise if you start with the right question. Listen out for facts / motivators / emotions that are provided to know what your next question / move is.

Always prep your first questions for a meeting – make it a killer question then just let them talk: Listen for facts / motivators.

If you ask the right 1st question, you get the right answers and so listen!

1.       Start with killer open questions

2.      Probe

3.      Closed specific question

Always let the customer ramble as they will end up telling you things you never knew or had thought of. Importance of getting that first question right.

Great probing questions that dig into the emotional aspects of another person’s thoughts / feelings / desires / motives:

o   Why is that so important to you?

o   Why does that matter so much to you?

o   Why does that mean so much to you?

What I LOVED

I was recommended  to watch this particular 10 min TED Talk on the power of happiness, and what happiness can bring to work and every day life. It’s a very amusing and interesting 10 min video that will put a smile on your face and make you think about happiness in a slightly different light- CLICK HERE

What I LIKED

One of the things I have missed during the pandemic, is the ability to travel. For me, travelling is the university of life. In the absence of not being able to travel, I managed to come across this Netflix show over the weekend that has given me a little bit of a travel fix, and reminded me of whats out there once the pandemic is over, and something to give hope and aspire towards. Some of the properties are out of this world! CLICK HERE to see trailer.

Music to kick start your week: As it’s a grey soggy morning, I thought we could all do with something to get us up and pumped for the week. As a child growing up in the 80’s I use to LOVE this track and I hope you do too. (Check out the outfits, classic) – CLICK HERE TO JUMP INTO MONDAY

Final thought:

Feedback is a gift, and I’m always trying to improve or understand what’s working and what’s not. Please leave any constructive feedback that you feel can help me improve or continue with what’s working.

Thank you for reading and I hope that you have a successful and fulfilling day.
