The Iceberg Illusion – From October 24th 2022

Morning Team.

I know I’m actually on holiday, but as I receive so many positive emails about this MMM email, I thought I would make a commitment to sending this before I head off to see the Roman Baths with my family for a few days. ( I promise I will be logging off once I press send!)

I hope you all had a nice weekend. Here is what was going on in my world (and head), from last week:

What I LEARNED

Last week I volunteered at my kids school to provide the Year 11 students (16 year olds), with interview practice and general job application advice. It was a fascinating exercise and I absolutely LOVED it.

Having the opportunity to give back to help support the students was so fulfilling. I decided to write to the Headmistress to let her know what I learned from the experience, and wanted to share with you all here what I learned:

·        How brilliant the kids are! Those that attended had the courage to do so. It’s not easy going through what they did with people they have never met, going outside of their comfort zones. Just making that first step can be the hardest, but turning up and being present is so important.

·        I noticed how each of them identified a passion for sports, music or arts. It highlighted the power of extra-curricular activities, along with team environments that will help them in their future careers.

·        Each of the children could highlight a setback or challenge in their education or life, but had the self-awareness to discuss how they were able to overcome or use it to become a better person.

·        Each of the children were able to provide me something different and unique about them, which we could augment to help them stand out from the crowd in the future – an important aspect when interviewing.

·        They were open minded, and had a thirst for learning.

·        The views on what jobs they wanted were based on what their families did. I’ve suggested having parents come in to talk about their jobs and how they got there might be a good concept.

·        I suggested having Year 11’s impart their knowledge to Year 7’s would be a huge benefit both to the new year group, but also for the Yr 11 student to present their learnings looking back. Eg Some of the boys wished they took more notes in Yr 7, and 8, and didn’t spend so much time on their phones getting distracted, and studied harder. For year 7’s to hear that from Year 11 could be powerful and create a positive change.

What I LIKED

This is an interesting podcast I listened to last week, discussing thought on why Samsung and LG are licensing their O/S to competitor manufacturers – very topical:   https://open.spotify.com/episode/5EZGzSmec14AXNQdc5rAbK?si=R0AlXNNbTFOkPvkNlebElw

Final thought

I was thinking about the amount of Salesforce alerts that come through, and how much hard work goes into making these deals from to fruition and finally land. This then made me think of sales, and also those who are perceived as being successful in general, and so I thought I’d share this image below. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that people just don’t see, but through having the right mindset and resilience we are all able to achieve great things.

Feedback is a gift, and I’m always trying to improve or understand what’s working and what’s not. Please leave any constructive feedback that you feel can help me improve or continue with what’s working.

Thank you for reading and I hope that you have a successful and fulfilling day.
