Can we ever overcome our Fear of Failure – From October 23rd 2023

Morning Team.

Although I’m on holiday this week spending time with the family for half-term, I wanted to make sure I still kept my commitment to send out this weeks MMM. Here’s what’s been on my mind over the past week.

What I LOVED

When do we start to get our fear of failure? Last week I was fortunate to volunteer at my kids school, and support the Year 11 students by providing them with mock interviews. I found it a fascinating and rewarding experience, which taught me a lot about how teenagers think about their own learning, education and what they want to do next.

The biggest learning I took away though was how they all had this innate fear of failure, and that this fear was holding them back from trying new things, alongside worrying what other people would think about them. I remember feeling the same way when I was at school. What was interesting was the conversation I then had the following day with a friend, who also mentioned how they had been filled with a fear of failure recently which held them back from trying something new, but once they did finally get the courage to try whatever it was they wanted to do, it transformed their lives. When we discussed the original fear they had, it seemed silly, yet we all have it.

I started to imagine a life in which we didn’t worry about the consequences of trying something new, or what other people thought about us. and if we succeeded or not. What would that life look like and would it make us happier and more fulfilled. I guess we will never know.

In the meantime, a book that has helped me to overcome any fears I that I have had in the past, which I recommend is called ‘Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway’ by Susan Jeffers. I guess we’ll always have a fear of something, but learning how to harness this to ensure it doesn’t stop us from getting where we want to get to in life is key.

What I LEARNED

Having recently had COVID for the third time, I’ve learned how important it is to really listen to our bodies. I fairly recently started road cycling as a means of cardio fitness and try to go out at least once a week. I love it and I am itching to get back on the saddle but at the same time realise that my body is telling me no to rush it and to fully recover first. To fill the void I’ve been using the electric Lime and Forest bikes to commute around London which is good fun but not quite a exhilarating.

What I LIKED

I’ve been exploring new content on Apple TV Plus, and came across a show called Shrinking starring Harrison Ford. My wife and I really enjoyed it as bit of light relief TV viewing to put a smile on your face at the end of the day. Check out the trailer here:

Final thought
