Morning Team.
Apologies for not sending my usual MMM update last week. It was an exceptionally busy week at home and at work. I hope you had a nice weekend with whatever you were doing. Here’s what’s been on my mind over the past week.
What I LOVED
Have you ever come across someone who is so confident in their own abilities, that you start to doubt if you are the one who doesn’t have the ability or understanding?
Last week I was grabbing some breakfast in the work kitchen with a colleague, when we started having a conversation about how some people can come across as having all the answers to all the problems in a meeting, yet they lack the experience or are not even close to the problem (or the right solution), so you start to doubt yourself.
It turns out that there is a name for this! The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. Some researchers also include the opposite effect for high performers: their tendency to underestimate their skills.
The Dunning-Kruger effect can cause us to listen to confident people before reputable people. This has immeasurable effects, as we accept information and advice from those who will speak first and loudest, before those whose words will hold the most merit.
What I have taken away from reading into the Dunning-Kruger effect, is that it may ease your jealousy toward others who seem to “have it all together.” Thinking you know everything is a tell-tale sign you know little.
What I LEARNED
The previous two weeks have been exceptionally busy. There has been a lot of late nights and early mornings, with not much time to myself, or my family due to the amount of work expectations. I knew this would be the case, it goes with the territory, but when you are in the middle of it, its never easy on you or those around you (and home and at work). I found I needed to make certain compromises in order to prioritise the overall objectives that were being asked of me.
People tell you to be kind to yourself, and I never really know what that means, or how to do it. What I learned throughout this period, now that I can look back and reflect, is that I am actually proud of myself, and the amount of work and effort I put in, on top of trying to manage day to day life. Yes, I had to make certain sacrifices, but I did this knowing it was short term and would pay divided in the medium to long term growth.
Being kinder to myself, and trying to celebrate the personal wins, whatever they may be, is something I shall definitely try to continue to work hard on.
What I LIKED
Having watched and followed the success of The Lionesses (The English Women’s Football Team), I was intrigued about how they have got to where they are, and what has been their journey and mindset to get to European Champions and to the World Cup Final.
Their manager, Sarina Wiegman, does not carry out many behind the scenes or personal interviews, so I was looking forward to hearing what she had to say about the teams growth on The High Performance Podcast, and it definitely did not disappoint. In fact, I enjoyed listening to this podcast so much, I ended up downloading Sarina’s Audiobook – ‘What it Takes’, as I completely brought into everything I heard on this podcast interview and felt inspired from what I heard.
Final thought

Here is some music to kick start your week.
